A Legacy of Care, A Future of Hope

For 127 years, Young Moms Together (formerly Florence Crittenton) has been a refuge for young women, most recently at our longtime home on St. Margaret Street. But as buildings age and needs change, so must we. That’s why we decided to sell our historic home and create something more flexible, dignified, and aligned with the lives of today’s young mothers.

Young mothers today don’t need institutions—they need connection, opportunity, and access to housing, healthcare, childcare, and emotional support on their own terms. Young Moms Together reflects the heart of who we’ve always been: a community walking alongside young women with respect, trust, and love.

Our Impact

Every day in South Carolina, 19 girls under the age of 19 learn they are pregnant—and 8 of those pregnancies will result in the birth of a child.

Teen mothers face serious health risks, limited support, and a higher likelihood of dropping out of school, unemployment, homelessness, and having their children enter foster care. Many are navigating these challenges alone, without a stable support system.

That’s where Young Moms Together steps in. We’re the only program in the state providing compassionate, comprehensive care for teen mothers—from pregnancy through the first two years of their child’s life—offering the guidance, resources, and community they need to build a stronger future.

Our History

  • 1883 | First Crittenton Home Opens, New York

    Charles Crittenton opened a home for "fallen women & wayward girls" and names after his daughter who died at the age of four of scarlet fever.

    1897 | Christ Love Mission Established

    Claudia Tharin brings together a network of volunteers to help unwed pregnant women after reading about a young woman's suicide attempt. Volunteers open their homes to single pregnant women and mother in need.

    1899 | Crittenton Visits Charleston

    Dr. Kate Waller Barrett, one of the first female pediatricians, invites Crittenton to visit Christ Love Mission.

    1927 | Construction Begins

    With financial support from Crittenton, The Florence Crittenton Home and Hospital begins construction at 19 Saint Margaret Street.

    1932 | First Client Admitted

    With construction complete, the first client was admitted into Florence Crittenton Home and Hospital to live until her baby was born. Babies were born in the facility until the early 1950s.

    1972 | Integrated

    The first African American Client was admitted. A 20-year-old woman, who gave birth 8 days later.

    1976 | Social Work Begins

    Professional social work services begin to address the rise in unplanned pregnancies.

    1986 | Family Support Services Begin

    Family Support Services are established to provide housing stability for young parents

    1997 | Partnership with CCSD

    Educational day services without residential care launch in partnership with Charleston County School District

    2007 | History is Made

    19 St. Margaret Street is recognized as a historical landmark by the National Registry of Historic Places.

    2016 | Expansion of Residential Eligibility

    Began serving pregnant and parenting girls in foster care. Participants are allowed to remain at the home until their children are 6 months old, extending to 2 years old in 2022.

    Residential program moves from the institution-like building to single-family homes that provide a sense of home and security for young moms and their children
